WARHOL MARILYN SCREENPRINT ACHIEVES $134,500 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S NOVEMBER 3, 2008 AUCTION OF OLD MASTER, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PRINTS

World Auction Records Set for Picasso's Ines and Her Child and Rembrandt's Self-Portrait in a Cloak with a Falling Collar: Bust, Both $16,250, as well as for Etchings by Carl Rungius

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's La Troupe de Mademoiselle Eglantine Fetches $21,250

On November 3, 2008, Doyle New York held a successful auction of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints. With competitive international bidding, the sale totaled a strong $1,010,906 against a pre-sale estimate of $756,600-1,122,600 with 87% sold by lot and 96% by value.

Old Master prints were highlighted by Rembrandt van Rijn, Self-Portrait in a Cloak with a Falling Collar: Bust, etching, 1631, fifth state of five, which sold for a record $16,250.

European prints included several lithographs by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, including La Goulue, lithograph, 1894 and La Troupe de Mademoiselle Eglantine, color lithograph, 1896 which sold for $11,875 and $21,250, respectively; several prints and ceramics by Pablo Picasso, including Ines and Her Child, lithograph, 1947 which brought a record $16,250 and Goat's Head in Profile, painted white ceramic plate, 1952, which sold for $12,500; several works by and After Marc Chagall, including The Three Acrobats, color lithograph, 1957, $8,750 and Roses and Mimosas, 1967, color lithograph, $11,250; and prints by Joan Miro, including La Main soft-ground etching and color aquatint, 1953, $13,750.

American prints featured George Bellows, Preliminaries, lithograph, 1916 which fetched $28,750; Walter J. Phillips, Mamalilicoola, BC, color woodcut, 1928, a record $9,375; several rare-to-the-market etchings and drypoints by Carl Rungius, including Out of the Canyon, 1937 and Browsing, 1938, which each sold for record prices of $5,000 and $4,688, respectively; John Taylor Arms, West Forty-Second Street, etching, 1920, $5,000; several drypoints by Martin Lewis, including Suburban Evening, 1925, $5,000; two works by Howard Cook from 1930, Chrysler Building, wood engraving, $7,500 and New England City, etching, a record $2,125; and Rufino Tamayo, Hombre en Negro, color mixograph, 1976, a record $5,000.

The contemporary prints section was highlighted by several color screenprints by Andy Warhol, including [Cow and a Quarter], color screenprint, 1966, a record $15,000; two from the Marilyn portfolio (Feldman/Schellmann 23 and 31), 1967 which sold for $86,500 and $134,500, respectively; and The Star, 1981, $52,500; Marcel Duchamp, Pulled at Four Pins, etching, 1964, $5,000; and Josef Albers, DR-b, color screenprint, 1968, a record $4,000.
