MANY NEW AUCTION RECORDS SET AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S MAY 2, 2007 AUCTION OF OLD MASTER, MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY PRINTS
Competitive Bidding Drives Strong Prices for European, American and Contemporary Prints
On May 2, 2007 Doyle New York held another successful Old Master, Modern
and Contemporary Prints auction. 96 percent of the items offered were
sold, with the largest percentage bringing above estimate. Many new
auction records were set for individual prints or for any print by the
artist.
MODERN EUROPEAN PRINTS
Modern European prints featured Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Napoleon,
color lithograph, 1895, which brought $45,000; Lyonel Feininger,
Dorfkirche, woodcut, 1920, $4,800; wood engravings by Robert Gibbings,
including Dublin Under Snow, 1918 and Nude in Pool, 1920, $3,600 and
$6,000, respectively, the highest prices for any work by the artist;
wood engravings by Eric Gill, including Eve, 1926 and Girl in the Bath,
reached record prices of $5,100 and $3,000, respectively, the former a
new record for any print by the artist; James McBey, Venetian Night,
1930, etching, $5,400; Sybil Andrews, Storm, color linocut, 1935, a
record $19,200; several color linocuts by Lill Tschudi set new records,
including London Buses and Tour de Suisse, $34,800 and $25,200,
respectively, the highest prices for any work by the artist; Marc
Chagall, They Were in Forty Pairs, color lithograph, 1948, $19,200; M.C.
Escher, Rippled Surface, color linocut, 1950, $7,800; two 1953 color
lithographs by Zao Wou-ki, La Vieille Ville and Les Petits Bateaux,
record prices of $6,600 and $6,000, respectively; Pablo Picasso, Le
Peintre et Son Modele, linocut, 1965 and Wood Owl, painted and partially
glazed ceramic vase, 1969, record results of $19,200 and $8,400,
respectively; Rene Magritte, Paysage de Baucis, etching, 1966 reached a
record $15,600; and John Piper, Death in Venice, 1973, portfolio of 8
color screenprints fetched a record $30,000.
AMERICAN PRINTS
American prints included two color woodcuts from 1906 by Bror J. O.
Nordfeldt, Mist, The Anglers and North Sea Fisherman, new records of
$18,000 and $12,000, respectively, the former a new record for any print
by the artist; Joseph Pennell, British Industry, Whiskey and Tea,
mezzotint, 1909, a record $3,600; William Zorach, Sunrise, linocut,
1916, a record $10,200; Gustave Baumann, Peach and Plum Bloom, 1912,
color woodcut, a record $6,000; Louis Lozowick, Still Life with
Breakfast, lithograph, 1929, $3,600; Howard Cook, Fiesta, etching and
drypoint, 1933, a record $3,900; Mark Freeman, 2nd Avenue El,
lithograph, 1933, a record $1,800; two etchings by Reginald Marsh set
new records, 2nd Avenue El, 1929 and Jersey City Landscape, 1939, $4,200
and $2,700, respectively; Paul Landacre, Lot Cleaning, Los Angeles, wood
engraving, 1935, a record $2,400; Kyra Markham, Night Club, lithograph,
1935, a record $6,600; Miguel Covarrubias, The Lindy Hop, lithograph,
1936, $3,900; Martin Lewis, Chance Meeting, drypoint, 1940-41, a record
$14,400; and Robert Kipness, The Four Seasons, set of eight lithographs,
1977, $6,600, a new auction record for any print by the artist.
CONTEMPORARY PRINTS
The contemporary prints section was highlighted by Andy Warhol, Love is
a Pink Cake, complete set of 25 offset lithographs, 1953 which sold for
a record $14,400; Jasper Johns, Target, 1960, lithograph, brought
$60,000; two works by Ed Ruscha, Hollywood, color screenprint, 1968 and
Hollywood with Observatory, lithograph, 1969, $90,000 and $28,800,
respectively, the latter a new record; two color screenprints by Tom
Wesselmann, Nude (For Sedfre), 1969 and Cynthia in the Bedroom, 1981,
$6,600 and $9,000, respectively, the latter a new record; and Richard
Serra, Vesturey I, etching and aquatint, 1991, brought $11,400.
