SANDY SKOGLUND'S RETURN OF THE GOLDFISH FROM THE KULCHUR QUEEN COLLECTION SELLS FOR $10,625 IN DOYLE NEW YORK'S NOVEMBER 3, 2008 PHOTOGRAPHS AUCTION

Competition for Works by Duane Michals, Lynn Davis, Bert Stern, Barbara Morgan and Philippe Halsman

Doyle New York held an inaugural sale of Photographs on November 3, 2008. Buyers demonstrated their willingness to bid strongly for iconic and blue-chip photographs, as well as for items which appear less frequently on the market. The featured lot of the sale, Revenge of the Goldfish by Sandy Skoglund, from the Kulchur Queen Collection, sold for $10,625. Contemporary photography in general was strong, with Duane Michals's Mistaken Identity selling for $5,625, Lynn Davis's Untitled [Seascape] for $3,125, Bert Stern's Marilyn Monroe for $2,250, Philippe Halsman's portfolio of Warhol photographs for $1,700, as well as excellent prices for David Hockney and Michael Kenna.

High points of classic 20th century photography included images by Margaret Bourke-White, Weegee, Garry Winogrand, Ansel Adams, and Barbara Morgan, several of which sold above their estimates. The photographic archives in the sale were of interest to buyers, with the Max Ewing collection selling at $1,375 against an estimate of $600-900 and the Joseph Urban documentation at $1,750.

Early photography also proved to be generally popular. A collection of Union Cases sold for $2,500 and the iconic Kaloma image fetched $1,063 against an estimate of $800-1,200. A panoramic view of Wyoming and a family portrait by the colonial Mexican photographer Francois Aubert both exceeded their high estimates.
