Two Views of Venice by Del Campo Sell for $276,000 and $192,000
Respectively

A 1911 View of St. Petersburg by Beggrov Achieves $192,000

On May 22, 2007, Doyle New York held an auction of European Art. The sale showcased works by a wide variety of prominent European artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. With strong international competition from telephone bidders and buyers in the salesroom, the European Art section of the sale totaled $1,258,860 against an estimate of $971,800-1,400,700, with a remarkable 78% sold by lot and 90% sold by value.

Highlighting the sale were views by Federico del Campo (Peruvian, 1837-1927) and Alexander Karlovich Beggrov (Russian, 1841-1914). An 1891 view of Saint Mark's Square in Venice by del Campo was the top lot of the sale, achieving $276,000 from a buyer in the United Kingdom. Another view by del Campo of Venice looking towards the Doge's Palace and Santa Maria Della Salute executed in 1914 sold to a buyer from France for $192,000. A view of Saint Petersburg in twilight dated 1911 by Alexander Karlovich Beggrov sold for $192,000 to a buyer in New York. Strong prices were also achieved for works by such artists as Johann Wilhelm Preyer, Edouard Leon Cortes, Alfred von Wierusz-Kowalski, and Andre Brasilier, among many others.

FEDERICO DEL CAMPO
Federico del Campo was born in Lima, Peru, and studied art in Madrid. A widely traveled artist, starting around 1880 he began to specialize in views of Venice, producing superb examples that were eagerly purchased by collectors the world over. Del Campo is still considered one of the major view painters of the late 19th century.

Doyle New York is pleased to offer three Venetian views by the artist, including two works in oil and a watercolor, in the sale of May 22, 2007.

ALEXANDER KARLOVICH BEGGROV
Originally an officer in the Russian Navy, Alexander Karlovich Beggrov left military life to devote himself to painting. First studying at the Academy in St. Petersburg in 1870 and later in Paris under Bonnat, when Beggrov returned to Russia he began to specialize in views of his native St. Petersburg. This evocative twilight view of St. Isaac's Cathedral and the Admiralty from the Neva river is a particularly fine example of his work.
