CANOE, 1957, BY DAVID PARK ACHIEVES $1,801,000 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S NOVEMBER 7, 2007 AUCTION OF MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY ART

A World Auction Record for the Artist

Sale Totals Over 3 Million With Strong International Competition

On November 7, 2007, Doyle New York held an auction of Modern and Contemporary Art. The sale showcased paintings, drawings and sculpture by important European, American and Asian artists of the 20th century. Intense international competition in the salesroom and on the telephones sent the sale total to $3,440,576, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $2,201,700-3,298,300, with a strong 87% sold by lot and 93% sold by value.

Highlighting the sale was an important painting entitled ‘Canoe’ from 1957 by David Park which sold for $1,801,000 – a world auction record for the artist. Born in Boston, Park moved to California to study at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, after which he relocated to teach at the California Institute of Arts in San Francisco. At this time he was working in an abstract style. By the 1950s, Park had rejected pure abstraction, however he retained the influences of action painting. His mature, figurative style is uniquely his own and continues to have influence on the shape and direction of figurative painting today. Canoe is a great example of Bay Area figurative painting associated with Park's mature style, as well as that of his peers, such as Elmer Bischoff and Richard Diebenkorn.
