YURI PAVLOVICH ANNENKOV
(Russian, 1889-1974)
Yuri Pavlovich Annenkov visited Paris and worked in the studios
of M. Denis and F. Vallotton from 1911-1913. He joined the Avant-garde
movement after his return to Russia in 1913. He drew inspration
from traditional Russian folk lubki (prints) and later
created collages, before turning to Cubism. Annenkov was very
interested in theater and created set designs. He also created
a distinctive style of graphic portraits.

WILLIAM
SCOTT (British, 1913-1989)
British artist William Scott was trained at Belfast College of
Art and then at London's Royal Academy Schools, where he won prizes
for both sculpture and painting. He exhibited in the Paris Salon
d'Automne, in 1938, and later returned to England at the onset
of the War. Beginning in 1946, Scott taught at the Bath Academy
of Arts and became familiar with many of the St Ives artists.
He also joined the London Group, and in 1953 he visited the United
States, where he met Rothko, Pollock, Kline and deKooning. In
1984, he was elected a Royal Academician.

BORIS
(BER) ISRAILEVICH ANISFELD (Russian, 1879-1973)
Born in Belz, Moldova in Russia in 1879, Anisfeld studied at the
Odessa Art School, and after finishing in 1900, he studied at
the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg until 1909. Beginning in
1903, he participated in exhibitions, including the Union of Russian
Artists, and he was a member of the World of Art group. Anisfeld
was very involved in the theater and worked for the Theatre of
V. Kommissarzhevskaya and for the Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg.
In addition, he staged Russian ballets in Paris. He moved to the
United States in 1917, and worked as a set designer for the Metropolitan
Opera and the Chicago Opera.

ARSHILE
GORKY (Russian, 1904-1948)
Arshile Gorky was born in Armenia in 1904 and arrived in the United
States in 1920. In 1925, he entered the Grand Central School of
Art in New York as a student but soon became an instructor of
drawing, and was a member of the faculty from 1926 to 1931. His
work in the 1920s was influenced by Georges Braque, Paul Cezanne,
and Pablo Picasso. In 1930, Gorky's work was chosen for a group
show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. He was later associated
with deKooning, with whom he shared a studio. In the 1940s, he
became influenced by European Surrealists Joan Miro, Andre Masson,
and Matta.

NATAN
ISAEVICH ALTMAN (Russian, 1889-1970)
Nathan Isaiehvich Altman studied at the Odessa Art School from
1902-07, and in 1910, went to Paris, where he was influenced by
Picasso and Braque. In 1912, he moved to St. Petersburg, where
he explored Cubism, becoming a successful painter, sculptor and
set designer. He remained in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution
and continued working. From 1928 until 1935, Altman lived in France,
painting landscapes and still lifes, before returning to Russia
where he created acclaimed set and costume designs.

SYED
HAIDER RAZA (Indian, b. 1922)
Born in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in 1922, Syed Haider
Raza graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Art in Mumbai in 1943,
and later became one of the founding members of the Progressive
Artists' Group. This group was very influential in the Contemporary
art movement in India. It's members sought a new artistic
expression to reflect a national identity after the country's
independence in 1947. He was given a French Government Scholarship
in 1950, and studied at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in
Paris. He was awarded the Prix de la Critique in 1956. He was
later a visiting lecturer at the University of California in Berkeley
in 1962. His work has been the subject of important exhibitions
in India, and in 1981, the Government of India bestowed upon him
the Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honors.

JACK
TWORKOV (American, 1900-1982)
Born in Poland in 1900, American painter Jack Tworkov joined with
Willem deKooning and other Abstract Expressionists to establish
the New York School, which flourished in the 1940s through early
1950s. Tworkov was also a founding member of the New York avant-garde
art forum, The Club, in the early 1950s.

GEORGE
RICKEY (American, 1907-2002)
George
Rickey was a painter and a history teacher at The Groton School,
becoming a sculptor late in his career. He studied at the Academie
L'hote and Academie Moderne in Paris, and painted from 1930 until
the late 1940s, when he began creating moveable sculptures of
stainless steel. The spare shapes of these dynamic pieces are
precisely balanced and are activated by air currents and the pull
of gravity.

SAUL
STEINBERG (American, 1914-1999)
A
native of Rumania, Saul Steinberg gained popular renown for the
covers and drawings that he created for The New Yorker
for nearly 60 years. He was a master draftsman and his work became
the means to explore social and political systems, human foibles,
geography, architecture, language and, of course, art itself.
He defined drawing as ìa way of reasoning on paper.

ANGEL BOTELLO
(Spanish, 1913-1986)
The Spanish-Puerto Rican painter, sculptor and graphic artist
Angel Botello was known as "The Caribbean Gauguin" for
his use of bold colors and depictions of island life. He is considered
one of the greatest Latin American post-modern artists. Botello
developed his own artistic style and was never attached to any
particular artistic movement. He was a versatile artist who worked
in numerous artistic mediums.

FERNANDO
BOTERO (Columbian, b. 1932)
In 1948, Columbian artist Fernando Botero started work as an illustrator,
and in 1950, he traveled to Spain, where he studied at the Academy
of San Fernando in Madrid, and was influenced by Velazquez and
Goya in the Prado, as well as the frescoes he saw in Florence,
Italy. In Mexico from 1956-57, he was fascinated by the experience
of Muralism, which significantly influenced his future direction.
He introduced inflated forms into his work, puffing figures up
to an exaggerated size, and he combined the regional with the
universal, referring to his native Colombia as well as presenting
parodies of works of art

FRANCISCO
ZUNIGA (Mexican, 1912-1998)
Costa Rican born artist Francisco Zuniga studied drawing, stone
sculpture, and engraving at the School of Fine Arts in San Jose,
later moving to Mexico City where he studied stone carving at
La Esmeralda in 1936. He served on the faculty of La Esmeralda
until his retirement in 1970. Zuniga's art celebrates Central
American people, their lives and traditions. He has been the recipient
of numerous international prizes and awards.
