THE ESTATE OF DOLORES GRAY

Dolores Gray surrounded by highlights from her collection of fine jewelry. The photo depicts Ms. Gray in the Broadway musical, Destry Rides Again, for which she received a Tony Award nomination in 1960 for leading actress in a musical.

Doyle New York is honored to offer at auction jewelry from the estate of legendary Broadway and Hollywood actress Dolores Gray. Ms. Gray began her career at 14 singing in Hollywood supper clubs where, in 1939, she was discovered by Rudy Vallee and introduced to his national radio audience. In 1944, she appeared as a nightclub singer in the film Mr. Skeffington, starring Bette Davis, and in the same year made her debut on the Broadway stage in Seven Lively Arts. When Ethel Merman declined the London tour of Annie Get Your Gun, Ms. Gray stepped in and played the lead for three successful years. The toast of London's West End, Ms. Gray broke all attendance records at the Coliseum theatre, playing the role of the saucy sharpshooter to over 2.5 million people, including the Royal Family. In 1954, she won the Tony Award for her role in the Broadway musical, Carnival in Flanders. Signed on by MGM in 1955, she appeared in a string of Hollywood musicals, including Kismet, It's Always Fair Weather, and The Opposite Sex. In the years that followed, Ms. Gray appeared in television variety shows, recorded for Capital Records, headlined acclaimed nightclub acts, and returned to the stage for productions in New York and London.

"My mother once said to me, 'It's not a very happy life unless you make it very big.'" —Dolores Gray
