Mathieu Criard, circa 1740-45
The shaped rectangular serpentine front molded edge red and white marble top above a conforming bombe case enclosing two drawers sans traverse, raised on tapering legs, the whole mounted with leafage floral mounts, chutes and sabots and decorated with Japonais landscape scenes, stamped twice M. Criard JME.
Height 35 inches (90 cm), width 50 1/2 inches (1.28 m), depth 23 1/2 inches (59.5 cm).
Mathieu Criard became master in 1738 and specialized in lacquer furniture early in his career.

An old label on the reverse reads: Painted in 1835 at Melton Mowbray, England. The Coplow Hill near Melton is seen in the distance. The lady in the pony chaise is Lady Wilton; her daughter, Lady Mary on pony with old groom, Godwin. The family name of the Earls of Wilton is Edgerton, so the little girl with would be Lady Mary Edgerton. The painting came from Ferneley to his daughter, Mrs. Johnson and then to her daughter, Mrs. Norman of Melton Mowbray, from whom it was purchased.
