DOYLE NEW YORK AUCTION OF COINS, BANK NOTES, STAMPS AND MEDALS ON SEPTEMBER 18, 2007 TOTALS $2.35 MILLION
Including Property from the Estate of a Prominent New York Collector
Featuring Gold Bars and Coins Recovered from the S.S. Central America
Doyle New York held an auction of Coins, Bank Notes and Stamps on
September 18, 2007. A remarkable 99% of the lots offered were sold,
with the sale totaling a strong $2,352,306, well over the pre-sale
estimate of $1,398.075-2,010,250.
Highlighting the auction was a 1915 S Panama-Pacific $50 gold round
rated a incredible Mint State 66 that achieved $162,000 against a
pre-sale estimate of $100,000-150,000. Another 1915 S Panama-Pacific $50
gold round rated Mint State 65 sold for a strong $108,000, just over the
pre-sale estimate of $75,000-100,000. An 1855 Wass, Molitor & Co., 50
Dollars Gold, Brilliant Uncirculated, MS 60, also proved popular,
selling for $132,000, doubling the pre-sale estimate of $50,000-75,000.
S.S. CENTRAL AMERICA
Doyle New York was pleased to present a rare offering of thirty lots of
gold coins and bars recovered from the S.S. Central America, often
referred to as the Ship of Gold. She was one of the principal vessels
that sailed between Panama and the eastern coast of the United States in
the 1850s transporting vast quantities of gold from California. A
280-foot-long sidewheel steamer, she sank off the coast of Cape
Hatteras, North Carolina in September 1857 during a fierce hurricane.
Over four hundred souls were lost, and the ship slipped to the ocean bed
some 8,000 feet below with a fortune of gold on board. This remarkable
treasure included thousands of 1857 $20 Libertys minted in San Francisco
and tons of gold bars produced by the assayers of the Gold Rush era. The
wreck was discovered in 1988 by a group of scientists, and her precious
cargo was recovered, including most of the gold coins and assayer marked
bars, many still in mint condition. Highlights recovered from the S.S.
Central America included a Kellogg and Humbert 66.59 ounce gold ingot
and a Harris, Marchand & Co. 32.45 ounce gold ingot, that each sold for
$90,000.
