PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF ERNEST SHAPIRO TOPS DOYLE NEW YORK'S AUCTION OF RARE BOOKS AND AUTOGRAPHS ON MAY 2, 2007
Strong Competition for Books Illustrated by Eric Gill and Others
On May 2, 2007 at 10am, Doyle New York held an auction of Rare Books and
Motion Picture Memorabilia. The sale will offer a wide range of material
from a number of prominent collections and estates, including
illustrated books and catalogues raisonnes from the Estate of Ernest
Shapiro and motion picture memorabilia from the Estate of Douglas
Whitney.
Highlighting the sale was an extraordinary selection of property from
the estate of noted collector Ernest Shapiro, including group of books
illustrated by famed English 19th century illustrator, Eric Gill. The 17
lots featured in the sale represented an unusually high offering and
attracted strong competition. Geoffrey Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales
illustrated by Gill fetched $7,200 against a pre-sale estimate of
$3,000-5,000, and The Song of Songs also illustrated by Gill achieved
$4,200, well over the pre-sale estimate of $800-1,200. A two-volume set
of The Engravings of David Jones. A Survey by Douglas Cleverton, a
student of Eric Gill, also proved popular at the sale. It sold for
$3,300, approximately triple its pre-sale estimate of $1,000-1,500.
Books from the Limited Editions Club fared strongly with James Joyce's
Ulysses illustrated by Henri Matisse selling for $7,200 (est.
$3,000-5,000) and Aristophanes' Lysistrata illustrated by Pablo Picasso
selling for $6,000 (est. $3,000-4,000).
The motion picture memorabilia in the sale (lots 4001-4013) was
assembled over a long period of time by Douglas Whitney (born Virgil
Stram), himself a Hollywood actor. Hundreds of performers, both men and
women, are recorded, but the main emphasis is on the leading ladies of
Hollywood's Golden Age, such as Greta Garbo, Gloria Swanson, Marlene
Dietrich and Joan Crawford The stills were a mixture of vintage
photographs and copy prints and were assembled by the collector from
many sources including studios, press agents, institutions and private
collections. Many carried stamps of the source on the verso. The vintage
photographs often carried the original studio publicity labels
identifying stars, the film, and the scene.
