Including Two Collections of Musical Autographs and a Collection of Andrew Jackson Autographs

On Tuesday, November 9, 2004 at 10am, Doyle New York will hold an auction of Autographs and Fine Books. The sale will offer a wide range of material from a number of prominent estates and collections. Among the highlights are two collections of musical autographs and a collection of Andrew Jackson autographs. The exhibition will be open from Saturday, November 6 through Monday, November 8. Doyle is located at 175 East 87th Street in Manhattan.

MUSICAL AUTOGRAPHS
Jean Feder was the foremost concert impresario in Rumania during the period between the Wars, and his activities extended to Paris and Vienna as well. During his career, which lasted into the late 1930s, he met, arranged concerts for, and developed lasting friendships with some of the great artists of his day. These include Luisa Tetrazzini, Pablo Casals, Fyodor Chaliapin, Eugene Ysaye, Fritz Kreisler, the young and emerging talents of Jascha Heifetz and Mischa Elman, as well as scores of great and fascinating musical and theatrical personalities. He died in 1940.

His son, Edgard Feder of New York City, a musicologist and cellist, saved Jean Feder's collection of photographs and autographs. Over his own lifetime, he collected additional photographs and autographs, which now form a part of the collection in the auction.

One of the highlights of the Feder Collection is an extraordinary fan of gold-mounted ivory decorated with old mine and rose cut diamonds. The 21 leaves have been signed, some with drawings, by 40 composers and musical performers between 1890 and 1939, including Ruggiero Leoncavallo, Pablo de Sarasate, Fritz Kreisler, Marcella Sembrich, Annette Essipova, Tommaso Salvini, Eugen d'Albert and others.
The sale will also include a selection of musical autographs from another private collection. Notable in this collection is an autograph musical quotation by Giuseppe Verdi of the aria T'amo d'amore from his opera Luisa Miller. The quotation is dated Naples, 10 December 1849, two days after the opera made its Naples debut.

ANDREW JACKSON AUTOGRAPHS
For collectors of Americana, the sale will offer eight lots of autographs and other material relating to Andrew Jackson, hero of the War of 1812 and the seventh President of the United States. The autographs range in date from 1819 to 1835 and include examples written from ìWashington Cityî as well as from his beloved home, the Hermitage, in Nashville, TN. In addition to the autographs, the auction will also offer a lock of hair accompanied by a note reporting that it is ìGen. Jackson's hair cut off by his daughter-in-law, Mrs. Andrew Jackson.î

OTHER AUTOGRAPHS
The auction will offer dozens of autographs relating to prominent figures in literature, politics, world history, sports, music and science. Included are examples by Aaron Copland, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Sigmund Freud, George III of England, Muhammed Ali, Theodore Roosevelt, George Bernard Shaw, Stephen Sondheim and Leo Tolstoy. Of note is a two-page document dated 1 March 1899 signed by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson, also signed by James Madison, Secretary of State and C.A. Rodney, Attorney General. The document relates to patent granted to William Few regarding ìimprovement in the mode of making bene oil.î William Few (1748-1828) was a delegate from Georgia to the Continental Congress and a signer of the Constitution.

FINE BOOKS
The selection of fine books will include a group of Western Americana and a collection of sporting books. Featured are two first editions by British naturalist Richard Lydekker  – The Deer of All Lands (London: Rowland Ward, 1898) and The Great and Small Game of India, Burma and Tibet (London: Rowland Ward, 1900).
