RUSSIAN CLOISONNE ENAMELED SILVER KOVSCH SELLS FOR $32,500 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S BELLE EPOQUE AUCTION ON SEPTEMBER 25, 2008 A Showcase of Fin de Siècle Furniture, Decorations and Paintings Doyle New York's auction on September 25, 2008 showcased fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras were offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations were an assortment of fin de siecle paintings.Highlighting the sale was a Russian cloisonne enameled silver kovsch decorated with multi-colored foliate motifs. Measuring 7 1/2 inches long, the kovsch achieved a staggering $32,500 - many times over its pre-sale estimate of $1,500-2,500. The selection of exquisite porcelains featured an unsigned Mintons pate sur pate allegorical plaque decorated by Marc Louis Solon. The plaque was designed in white cameo relief against an olive ground with a frieze of classical maidens and cupids. Measuring just under 16 inches wide by 7 1/4 inches in height, the plaque sold for $28,750 against an estimate of $15,000-20,000. A similar unsigned Mintons plaque also decorated by Marc Louis Solon and dated 81, with the original paper label of T. Goode & Co. London Paris Exhibition 1878, sold for $27,500, surpassing its pre-sale estimate of $20,000-25,000. Other porcelain offerings included two Meissen gilt and polychrome decorated porcelain allegorical figural ewers representing air and water and dating to the second half of the 19th century. Competitive bidding sent the price of the ewers well over their estimate of $8,000-10,000 to reach $28,125. A pair of Sevres style gilt-bronze mounted porcelain urns measuring 18 3/4 inches in height sold for $11,875, well over their estimate of $2,000-2,500. Highlighting the selection of objects by Tiffany Studios was a graceful bronze and favrile glass Peacock dressing table mirror measuring 12 3/4 inches in height. With competitive bidding, the mirror achieved a strong $23,750. The silver section of the sale featured an assembled Tiffany & Co. sterling silver flatware service in the St. James pattern comprising approximately 161 pieces that sailed past their pre-sale estimate of $7,000-9,000 to achieve $20,000. An late 19th/early 20th century Neoclassical style carved mahogany tall case clock by Walter H. Durfee of Providence, RI, retailed by Tiffany & Co. also proved popular with the bidders. Measuring almost 9 feet in hieight, this impressive clock fetched $13,750, comfortably over its estimate of $8,000-12,000. The selection of fin de siecle paintings was highlighted by an Arabian Market Scene attributed to G.G. Moretti that sold for $10,625, many times its estimate of $1,500-2,500. Other works included a portrait of an Elegant Lady with a Greyhound by Ladislaus Bakalowicz (Polish, 1833-1904) and a depiction of a Mother and Children by the Riverbank by Andre Gisson (American, 1921-2003) that both achieved $5,000 - well over their respective pre-sale estimates.
