A Showcase of Fin de Siecle Furniture, Decorations and Paintings

Doyle New York's auction on June 4, 2008 showcased fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras were offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations were an assortment of fin de siecle paintings. With international competition from the bidders in the salesroom, telephone bidders, absentee bidders, and bidders on the Internet, the sale totaled a strong $1,649,705 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,043,350 - 1,538,950 with 76% sold by lot and 90% sold by value.

Tiffany & Co. Makers Sterling Silver Coffee and Tea Service  
Pattern No. 16631, circa 1907-38
In the St. Dunstan pattern, comprising a kettle on stand, coffee pot, teapot, two-handled covered sugar bowl, creamer, two-handled waste bowl and an oval two-handled tray, each decorated with applied stylized leaf motifs.
Height of kettle on stand 12 inches, length of tray 28 inches, total approximately 265 ounces, all in.
This service was purchased by the present consignor's grandfather, Harold Irving Clayton, a Wall Street stockbroker responsible for the Colgate-Palmolive merger. It was bought from Almira H. Torrey, Pelhamdale Lodge, Pelham, New York in 1938 for $450 for Mr. Clayton's wife Emily Boone Clayton.

Pair of Louis XVI Style Gilt-Bronze Mounted Kingwood and Tulipwood Inlaid Cabinets  
In two parts, the galleried upper section of break front outline with rounded corners, enclosing a pair of doors with Sevres style porcelain plaques painted with a flower filled urn within a turquoise reserve heightened with gilt, flanked by a pair of stacked open compartments, the conforming lower section with a frieze drawer with floral decorated plaques, raised on tapering fluted circular legs joined by an elongated X-form stretcher.
Height 49 inches, width 41 1/4 inches, depth 12 1/2 inches.

Osler Style Cut Glass Throne Chair  
Last quarter of the 20th century
In colorless glass, the serpentine-shaped crest with a central fan motif, above a padded and tufted back flanked by columnar stiles surmounted by ball finials, continuing to straight padded arms with five short columnar supports, over a padded and tufted seat, raised on faceted flattened ball and tapering paneled circular legs.
This chair is closely related to a design for an armchair in the F&C Osler archives, circa 1880 in the Birmingham Museums and Art Gallery, Birmingham

Decorated in the Aesthetic Movement style, with amber colored butterflies in flight, in textured and iridized glass, bamboo shoots and blossoms in shades of green colored glass against a sky blue ground, on ball feet.

Meissen Gilt and Polychrome Decorated Porcelain Allegorical Figural Ewer  
Second half of the 19th century
From a set of the Four Elements, this example representing Earth, of flattened baluster form with an elongated pouring spout and S-shaped handle formed by a bundle of wheat, one side with a mountainous landscape with a fox, deer, boar and a bear being pursued by a dog, an applied figure of Diana seated on the shoulder, and Pan adorns the rear, the other side with an idyllic landscape, the base and top with applied figures of putti.
Height 24 1/2 inches.

The domed top with four medallions depicting pairs of women continuing to a square hood fitted with a circular white enameled dial with black Arabic numerals, on elongated columnar legs painted with women, ending in a square base with conforming decoration against a pink ground, on bun feet.

Of circular form, decorated with a turning mirrored center surmounted by a figure of cupid standing inside of a shell-shaped gondola holding an oar pointing to hours of the clock.
