TIFFANY & CO. SILVER FLATWARE SERVICE ACHIEVES $46,000 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S FEBRUARY 13, 2008 BELLE EPOQUE AUCTION

Tiffany Studios Turtleback Prism Lamp Sells for $34,000

A Showcase of Fin de Siecle Furniture, Decorations and Paintings

Doyle New York's auction on February 13, 2008 showcased fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras were offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations were an assortment of fin de siecle paintings. With international competition from the bidders in the salesroom, telephone bidders, absentee bidders, and bidders on the Internet, the sale totaled a strong $1,004,094 against a pre-sale estimate of $780,300-1,162,750, with 82% sold by lot and 90% sold by value.

Highlighting the sale was an extensive Tiffany & Co. silver flatware service in the Lap Over Edge pattern designed by Charles Grosjean. Each utensil in this remarkable service featured exquisite etched decoration of various flora and fauna. The subject of spirited bidding during the sale, the service fetched $46,000, easily surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $25,000-35,000.

Competitive bidding sent the price of a Tiffany Studios reticulated bronze and Favrile glass turtleback prism lamp in the Moorish style to $34,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $25,000-30,000.
