PAIR OF JARDINIERE STANDS ACHIEVE $79,000 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S SEPTEMBER 26, 2007 AUCTION OF THE BELLE EPOQUE

Gorham Aesthetic Movement Silver Fish Soup Tureen Sells For $55,000

A Celebration of the Fine and Decorative Arts of the Fin de Siecle

Doyle New York's auction on September 26, 2007 showcased fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras were offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations were an assortment of fin de siecle paintings.

Highlighting the sale was an impressive pair of Louis XVI style gilt-bronze and rouge marble jardiniere stands measuring 50 1/2 inches in height. With competitive bidding from the salesroom and the telephones, the pair sold for a strong $79,000. A pair of Empire style gilt and patinated-bronze and marble brule parfums by Henry Dasson, dated 1884, sold for $33,400.

Top prices were also paid for silver objects in the sale. A Gorham Aesthetic Movement sterling silver two-handled covered fish soup tureen in the Japanesque style achieved a surprisingly strong $55,000. Measuring 8 1/2 inches in height, the tureen was decorated with swimming fish and the domed cover featured a cast turtle finial. Heavy competition resulted in strong prices for silver by other makers. A silver coffee and tea service by Odiot in the Louis XVI style sold for $31,000, and a Whiting Mfg Company Aesthetic Movement sterling silver and mixed metal seafood salad set in the Japanesque style achieved $20,000.

The selection of Art Glass was led by a delicate Quezal Jack in the Pulpit vase measuring 12 inches in height, which sold for $16,250. Highlighting the fin de siecle paintings was Margent Allen's oil on canvas depicting An Important Arrest. The work was purchased by a European buyer for $27,400.
