PAIR OF FIGURES OF ANCIENT EGYPTIANS AFTER EMILE PICAULT ACHIEVE $42,000 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S BELLE EPOQUE AUCTION ON JUNE 5, 2007

A Celebration of the Fine and Decorative Arts of the Fin de Siecle

Doyle New York’s auction on June 5, 2007 showcased fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque.  Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras were offered, as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations were an assortment of fin de siecle paintings. Highlighting the sale was a remarkable pair of pair of gilt and patinated-bronze, rouge marble, slate and ebonized figures of ancient Egyptians after a model by Emile Picault. Estimated at $4,000-6,000, the pair were the object of strong competitive bidding that sent their final price to a staggering $42,000. Also attracting attention was an exquisite Tiffany & Co. 18 kt. yellow gold footed center bowl, circa 1907-38, measuring 3 3/4 inches in height and a diameter of 9 3/4 inches, total approximately 34 ounces. The bowl achieved $36,000 -- triple the median estimate of $10,000-15,000.
