A SELECTION OF AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS
THE DOLORES GRAY COLLECTION

A special section of the auction will be devoted to property from the estate of the legendary chanteuse and actress Dolores Gray. Ms. Gray began her singing career as a teenager in Hollywood supper clubs where, in 1939, she was discovered by Rudy Vallee and introduced to his national radio audience. In 1944, she appeared as a singer in the film Mr. Skeffington, starring Bette Davis, and in the same year made her debut on the Broadway stage in Seven Lively Arts. When Ethel Merman declined the London tour of Annie Get Your Gun, Ms. Gray stepped in and played the lead for three successful years. The toast of London's West End, Ms. Gray broke all attendance records at the Coliseum theatre, playing the role of the saucy sharpshooter to over 2.5 million people, including the Royal Family. In 1954, she won the Tony Award for her role in the Broadway musical, Carnival in Flanders. Signed on by MGM in 1955, she appeared in a string of Hollywood musicals, including Kismet, It's Always Fair Weather, and The Opposite Sex. In the years that followed, Ms. Gray appeared in television variety shows, recorded for Capital Records, headlined acclaimed nightclub acts, and returned to the stage for productions in New York and London.

Among the Dolores Gray property offered is variety of Louis XV and Louis XVI style living room, dining furniture and accessories, including tables, commodes, seating furniture, chandeliers and sconces. Of special note is a handsome Steinway ebonized baby grand piano and bench (est. $5,000-7,000). Porcelain collectors will find an extensive selection of Royal Copenhagen Florica Danica porcelain articles, including covered tureens, platters, compotes, dishes and dinner plates. Porcelain services by other makers are also represented. The selection of George III silver includes a kettle on stand (est. $1,000-1,500). American silver is represented in part by a Gorham sterling silver flatware service in the Strasbourg pattern (est. $3,000-5,000). Three other interesting items include a Louis XV style gilt-bronze cartel clock (est. $3,000-5,000), an Empire style malachite gilt-bronze mantel clock with a spread winged eagle finial (est. $3,000-5,000), and a Sevres style bisque porcelain portrait bust of Marie Antoinette (est. $1,000-1,500).
