DOYLE NEW YORK TO AUCTION FINE AND DECORATIVE ARTS OF
THE BELLE EPOQUE ON FEBRUARY 9, 2005
Featuring Furniture, Decorations and Paintings from the
Estate of Tony-Award Winning Actress Dolores Gray
Doyle New
York's auction on Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at 10am will showcase
19th and 20th century fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence
of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis
XV and XVI revivals, Victorian and Art Nouveau eras will be offered,
as well as art glass, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories,
clocks, sconces, chandeliers and rugs. Complementing the furniture and
decorations will be an assortment of fin de siecle paintings. A special
section of the sale will be devoted to property from the estate of Tony-Award
winning actress Dolores Gray. The exhibition will be on view from Saturday,
February 5 through Tuesday, February 8. Doyle is located at 175 East
87th Street in Manhattan.

DOLORES GRAY COLLECTION
The Dolores Gray Collection offers over 130 lots of Louis XV and XVI
style furniture, decorations, silver and porcelain, including Flora
Danica and Meissen, as well as a selection of fine paintings. (more)
FURNITURE
AND DECORATIONS FROM OTHER OWNERS
Among the furniture highlights in the auction are two Napoleon III gilt-bronze
and Sevres style porcelain mounted center tables, each with a large
painted circular plaque depicting Louis XVI surrounded by fashionably
dressed ladies (est. $12,000-18,000 and $18,000-22,000); a micromosaic
diminutive side table decorated with views of Rome (est. $18,000-22,000);
and a Louis XVI style side table by Paul Sormani (est. $4,000-6,000).
Arts & Crafts furniture is represented by two oak sideboards, including
one by Gustav Stickley (est. $2,000-3,000), and a set of eight Limbert
oak and rush-seat side chairs. A fine pair of French Art Deco giltwood
and green upholstered lounge chairs attributed to Sue et Mare will be
of interest to many (est. $3,000-5,000).
The selection of decorations offers a rare Juvet & Co. Terrestrial
Relative Time Globe (est. $10,000-12,000) and an Italian gilt-bronze
mounted micro-mosaic traveling writing box (est. $12,000-18,000). Also
featured are an exquisite Cartier Art Deco yellow enamel and agate travel
clock (est. $9,000-12,000) and a German Neoclassical style porcelain
covered urn painted with a continuous scene of Venus and putti, measuring
65 inches in height (est. $8,000-12,000).
ART
GLASS
For collectors of French, Bohemian and European art glass, there is
an extensive offering. Lalique collectors will recognize a lovely Miroir
Cygnes sculptural group and a frosted figure of a Water Buffalo, as
well as a variety of other important models. Galle glass is well represented.
Highlighting this category is a beautiful acid-etched cameo glass dome-shaped
plafonnier in burgundy and lime green against a frosted colorless ground
featuring an organic leaf design (est. $20,000-30,000). Among the other
glassmakers featured in the sale are Loetz, Daum Freres, Le Verre Francais,
Orrefors, Poshinger, Kralik, Palme-Konig, Auguste-Jean, Schlevogt and
Moser. Examples of Italian glass include an impressive Barovier five-light
chandelier.
Victorian and Art Nouveau glass by American makers offers a wonderful
selection of glass by Hobbs, Brockunier & Co., Mount Washington,
Steuben Glass Works (designs by Frederick Carder), and Quezal art glass.
TIFFANY
STUDIOS
A selection of exquisite objects by Tiffany Studios features a bronze
and Favrile glass ten-light Lily lamp, a bronze and leaded glass Spider
lamp, various iridescent glass vases, candlesticks and bowls, as well
as desk accessories in various patterns.
ART
POTTERY
Among the Art Pottery offerings are articles made by or attributed to
Rookwood, Weller, Owen, Van Briggle, American Encaustic Tile Company
(AETCO), and Trent.
PORCELAIN
Porcelain collectors will be pleased with offerings by a variety of
French, British, Continental, Italian, and other makers, including Meissen,
Sevres, KPM, Pirkenhammer, Limoges, Royal Crown Derby, Royal Worcester,
Minton, Copeland, and Capo di Monte.
SILVER
The silver section will offer a pair of Marie Zimmermann sterling silver
and red enameled covered boxes, a Whiting Manufacturing Company Japanesque
style mixed metal bowl, and a selection of pieces by Tiffany & Co.
and Georg Jensen. Also featured is a group of Russian enameled silver
articles.
SCULPTURE
In the bronze sculpture category there is a diverse selection of statues,
including models after F. Barbedienne, Marcel Bouraine, Albert Ernest
Carrier-Belleuse, V. Delaplane, Alfred Dubacand, Paul Dubois, Etienne-Henri
Dumaige, Alexei Gratcheff (Farewell Kiss II), Rudolph Kaesbach, Auguste
Moreau, Mathurin Moreau, N. Mayer, Henri Peinte, and E. Picault. In
addition, the sale features a Neoclassical style marble and patinated
bronze sculpture of a semi-nude Classical female reclining figure and
a cold painted bronze, wood and ivory Chinoiserie figure after a model
by Dorothea Charol (est. $3,000-5,000).
PAINTINGS
The paintings section will showcase 19th and early 20th century works
by artists of the French, German, British, Dutch, Austrian, Italian,
Belgian and American Schools. Highlights include a wonderfully opulent
still life of cascading roses by the Belgian artist Modeste Carlier
(1820-1878). Lucien Adrion captures the grandeur of Paris cast in bright
mid-day sun with his Carousel Les Tuilleries. Also of note is
Antoine Bouvard's impressionistic interpretation of Venetian palazzos
reflected in the ripples of the backwaters of Venice. Other featured
works include two romantic landscapes by the French Barbizon painter
Georges Michel; two works by Andre Gisson; a beautifully executed bronze
depicting a stag, doe and fawn by Antoine-Louis Barye; a hunting scene
by Jan Willem Pieneman; and a view of Paris in the rain by Edouard Leon
Cortes.
