NEPALESE GILT-BRONZE FIGURE ACHIEVES $158,500 AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S AUCTION OF ASIAN WORKS OF ART ON SEPTEMBER 16, 2008
Sale Featured Property from the Estate of Anthony P. Russo and Property from the Salgo Trust for Education
Strong International Competition from Buyers in Hong Kong and China
Doyle New York's Asian Works of Art auction on September 16, 2008
attracted strong competition from an international audience of buyers.
Highlighting the sale was property from two distinguished collections --
the Estate of Anthony P. Russo and the Salgo Trust for Education. The
overwhelmingly Asian audience in the salesroom offered strong
competition against absentee bidders, Internet bidders and telephone
bidders from a number of countries. In all, the sale totaled a very
strong $580,937 -- within the pre-sale estimate of $458,350-686,050 --
with 66% sold by lot and 83% by value.
In the weeks leading up to the auction, a tremendous amount of interest was garnered by a 17th/18th century Nepalese gilt-bronze figure, possibly Vajrabhairava, measuring 10.5 inches in height, from the Estate of Anthony P. Russo. The figure was cast with six arms, clasping his consort in his primary arms, while his remaining arms held ritual instruments. After much competition between bidders in the salesroom and on the telephones, this remarkable bronze sold to a buyer in Hong Kong for $158,500 - soaring past its pre-sale estimate of $15,000-25,000.
Also from the Estate of Anthony P. Russo was an 18th century Tibetan gilt-bronze of Vajrabhairava measuring 7.5 inches in height. Estimated at $500-700, the figure attracted such strong interest and heavy competition that it ultimately fetched $17,500 from a buyer in Hong Kong.
Other bronzes in the auction fared equally well, among them an elegant 18th century Chinese bronze vase of cong form with the Xuande six-character mark and measured 7.25 inches in height. Consigned by the Salgo Trust for Education, the vase sold to a buyer from China for $18,750 - many times over its pre-sale estimate of $2,000-3,000.
Another bronze object from the Salgo Trust for Education was an 18th
century Chinese bronze tripod censer of globular form, measuring 7
inches in height, the base marked with the Xuande six-character mark. It
was sold to a buyer in China for $10,000, against a pre-sale estimate of
$1,500-2,000.
Highlighting the selection of jades was a diminutive Chinese jade figure
of a mythical chimera dating to the Six Dynasties Period. Measuring 4
inches in length, the piece sold to a buyer from New York for $15,000.
Cloisonne objects were also in demand at the auction. A pair of Chinese
cloisonne vases from the 18th century, each of square gu form and
measuring 5 inches in height sold to a buyer from Canada for $11,875.
Pottery offerings included a Chinese painted figure of a processionary
horse from the Han Dynasty standing 18 inched in height. Consigned by
the Salgo Trust for Education, it sold for $9,375 to a buyer from Hong
Kong.
The selection of Chinese porcelains included a blue and white glazed
vase from the Kangxi Period decorated with scenes of ladies and
attendants that sold to a buyer from New York for $8,125; a celadon
glazed bowl with the Qianlong Seal Mark and of the Period that sold to a
buyer from Canada for $8,125; and a famille rose glazed vase dating to
the 19th century, the base with Guangxu six-character mark, that sold to
a buyer from Hong Kong for $6,875.
Other notable offerings included a 17th/18th century Tibetan Mandala
measuring 27 x 16 1/2 inches from the Estate of Anthony P. Russo that
sold to a buyer from Switzerland for $8,750. A group of three Chinese
silk embroidered robes from the late 19th century sold to a buyer from
China for $6,875, and a group of four Chinese swords from the 19th/20th
century from the Salgo Trust for Education sold to a buyer from Nevada
for $6,250.
