Satsuma Vase from a Florida Collection Achieves $75,000

Chinese Archaic Bronze Wine Vessel from a Washington, DC Collection Fetches $46,875

Doyle New York's Asian Works of Art auction on September 18, 2007 attracted strong competition from an international audience of buyers bidding in the salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet. Highlighting the sale was an important Satsuma vase from Florida collection, Meiji Period, the base signed Dai Nihon Kyoto, Tojiki Goshigaisha, Ryozan Sho. Measuring 21 inches in height, the vase sold for $75,000. A Chinese Archaic bronze ritual wine vessel, Fanghu, of squared section, from a Washington, DC collection also attracted interest from bidders, selling for a strong $46,875. Other notable prices were achieved by Indian paintings and Chinese and Korean porcelains.

Important Satsuma Vase
Ryozan, Meiji Period
Of large squared high shouldered form, tapering to a slightly flared foot, each side painted with scenes of men, women and children in a lush garden along a river with mountains in the distance, songbirds seated on the blossoming branches of a prunus tree, women and children at the edge of a forest along a brook before a large garden lantern, grouse feeding among tall grasses, all on a ground of overlapping fans and swirling patterns, the short neck worked with a profusion of blossoming flowerheads, base signed Dai Nihon Kyoto, Tojiki Goshigaisha, Ryozan Sho, below the Yasuda Company trademark (Great Japan, Kyoto Porcelain Company, genuine Ryozan.)

Chinese Archaic Bronze Ritual Wine Vessel, Fanghu
Of squared section, cast crisply on all four sides with a central dragon flanked by interlocking dragons and birds to either side in mirror form, the minor sides with the same design and interrupted by loop handles with a bovine mask crowned with confronting birds, the loose rings with a scrolling design, all above a band of leopards, plain foot rim, areas of green patination.
Height 15 1/4 inches.

Comprising a green glass bottle worked in relief with chilong; enameled blue glass bottle; glass bottle with red and green clouds and bats in relief on a swirling brown ground; amber glass bottle with dark brown flecking; blue and white porcelain bottle and a white porcelain bottle with red enamel fish; green stained ivory cylindrical bottle with dragon finial; and a coconut ovoid bottle.

16th Century
Of shouldered form, painted with figures in a garden landscape below whispy clouds between a lappet border at the foot and a thin scrolling band at the neck; Together with a tapered Wucai Box. With flat fitted lid, painted with a dragon motif, base with Wanli six-character mark.
Height of vase 7 1/2 inches.

Chinese Celadon Glazed Censer
Song Dynasty
In Guanyao style, of bombe form, with loop handles to either side, applied overall with a crackled thick celadon glaze thinning at the rim exposing the dark gray body underneath.

Korean Celadon Glazed Vase
Choson Dynasty
Of hexagonal form, the rounded body raised on a base of six feet separated by brackets, all rising to a tall tapering neck, the body molded in low relief with deer and cranes amid bamboo, pine, lingzhi fungus and rockwork before mountain peaks in the distance and a full moon, covered overall in a light blue glaze.
Height 9 inches.

Chinese Mother-of-Pearl and Black Lacquer Storage Box
Kangxi Period
Of rectangular form with two panel doors below two small drawers opening to five drawers set with paktong fittings, door pulls and handles on either side, the exterior and interior inlaid with finely detailed genre scenes, the lid with scenes from Ode to the Red Cliffs, and signed Jiang Qianli.
Height 13 inches, width 12 3/4 inches, depth 9 1/2 inches.
