THE DOYLE+DESIGN SALE ON OCTOBER 10, 2007 SHOWCASED 20TH AND 21ST
CENTURY FURNITURE, ART AND DESIGN
Featuring Designs by Syrie Maugham and George Nakashima and Works of Art
by Franz Josef Kline and Conrad Marca-Relli
On Wednesday, October 10, 2007, Doyle New York hosted the inaugural
Doyle+Design auction. This popular sale showcased an array of Modern and
Contemporary furniture, decorations and art by some of the most
prominent designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries.
The top lot of the day was a cabinet by Syrie Maugham that sold for
$37,000. Fine art featured a 1949 abstract on paper by Franz Klein that
achieved $28,000. With competitive bidding from the salesroom, the
telephones and the Internet, the auction totaled a strong $715,700
against an estimate of $543,600-795,400 with 79% sold by lot and 89% by
value.
FURNITURE AND DECORATIONS
Highlighting the sale was a stylish 1930s breakfront display cabinet by the legendary British decorator Syrie Maugham that sold to a New York buyer for $37,000, over double the pre-sale estimate of $10,000-15,000. Created of mirrored wood and measuring six feet in height, the cabinet descended in the prominent Grace and Phipps families to the present owner's grandmother. Also popular at the sale was a three-door cabinet from 1959 by George Nakashima measuring 7 feet 6 inches in length that was bought by a Mid-Atlantic buyer for $28,000. The walnut cabinet featured doors inset with pandanus cloth. A four-panel screen by Piero Fornasetti entitled 'City of Cards' was bought by a New York buyer for a strong $20,000. From the collection of style setters Ellin and Renny Saltzman was a stunning set of eight chromed metal and python-patterned leather upholstered dining chairs, 1970s, designed by Pierre Cardin that sold for $18,750 to a Mid-Atlantic buyer.
A selection of glass by Steuben sold for the benefit of Hackensack University Medical Center achieved strong prices at the sale. A glass Gazelle Bowl by Sidney Waugh sold for $18,750, and a glass and vermeil Puma Rock by Paul Schultze sold for $17,500, both to a Midwestern buyer.
FINE ART
Modern and Contemporary Art in the auction was highlighted by a work on
paper by Franz Josef Kline entitled, Rice Paper Abstract, 1949. Kline,
Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning were among the most revered
artists of the Abstract Expressionist generation. All three also tested
their ideas in black and white. Rice Paper Abstract was an early action
painting in a limited palette. It carried all of the energy of one of
Kline's large and expressive works notwithstanding its small size.
Property from the Collection of Theodore and Dede Edlich, the work
fetched $28,000 from a California buyer.
Also from the Collection of Theodore and Dede Edlich were two works by
American artist Conrad Marca-Relli (1913-2000). An untitled mixed media
collage on canvas sold for $11,875 to a buyer in Italy, and an untitled
paper collage and ink on paper sold for $9,375 to a New York buyer, both
many times over their respective estimates. Other notable works included
Man in a Red Suit, a wood, oil and vinyl sculpture by William Dickey
King from the Collection of Theodore and Dede Edlich that sold for
$10,625, and Charles Hinman's 1967 abstract, Painting With 2" Path, from
the Collection of Ellin and Renny Saltzman that achieved $10,000.
