Made in the USA: American Masters from The Phillips Collection, 1850–1970, the landmark exhibition at The Phillips Collection curated by Dr. Susan Behrends Frank, showcased over 200 works by more than 120 artists. Organized as a thematic journey, Made in America revealed the breadth of America’s modernist vision, from the late 19th century through Abstract Expressionism.

In her presentation, From Ryder to Rothko: Duncan Phillips and the Quest for the Best of American Art, Dr. Susan Behrends Frank will profile the exhibition, Made in the USA. She will explore the rich diversity and multiplicity of voices of the well-known and the lesser-known works assembled over 50 years by Duncan Phillips, the museum’s founder. Dr. Frank will reveal her insights into Duncan Phillips’s patronage of American artists, and how, through his material support and encouragement, The Phillips Collection became a major force in American modernism.
