DOYLE NEW YORK'S IMPORTANT JEWELRY SALE ON APRIL 15, 2013 TOPS $7.5 MILLION

Carter Fancy Vivid Yellow Diamond Ring Achieves $233,000

Property from the Estate of Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl Fetches $1.5 Million

Consignments Are Currently Being Accepted for Doyle New York's Upcoming Jewelry Auctions

Doyle New York's Important Jewelry auction on April 15, 2013 saw competition from hundreds of bidders in the salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet. The sale offered jewelry spanning the Antique, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern eras by some of the world's most prestigious makers, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., and David Webb. Attracting a great deal of attention was a selection of high carat weight diamond rings. Also featured were fine watches and objets de vertu, including elegant compacts and cufflinks. A special section of the sale was devoted to property from the Estate of Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl.

Strong competition resulted in a successful auction total of $7,523,063, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $4,811,200-6,931,700, with a strong 84% sold by lot and 89% sold by value.

Highlighting the diamond rings was an example by Cartier set with a marquise-shaped Fancy Vivid Yellow diamond, VS1 clarity, approx. 4.41 carats, flanked by two diamonds, approx. 1.50 carats, from the Estate of Elisabeth Sloan Riddle. The ring fetched $233,000, far surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $80,000-120,000.

The top lot among the necklaces was a stunning natural Burma ruby and diamond necklace, with rubies totaling approx. 44.70 carats and diamonds totaling 50.70 carats. Estimated at $150,000-200,000, the necklace achieved $257,000.

Brooches in the sale featured a classic Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery-Set sapphire and diamond clip-brooch designed as a leaf, from the Collection of an East Coast Lady. Strong competition sent the bidding past the pre-sale estimate of $100,000-150,000 to reach $185,000.

THE ESTATE OF CONSUELO VANDERBILT EARL
A special section of the auction showcased important jewelry, timepieces and objets de vertu from the Estate of Consuelo Vanderbilt Earl (1903-2011). Highlighting the collection was a Cartier rock crystal and diamond Model A Mystery clock that fetched a record $515,000.  More
