DOYLE NEW YORK'S AUCTION OF IMPORTANT ENGLISH AND CONTINENTAL FURNITURE AND DECORATIONS ON OCTOBER 24, 2012 TOPS $1.5 MILLION
Including Old Master Paintings and Drawings
Watercolor View of the Pantheon Sells for a Record $80,500
Doyle New York held a successful auction of Important English and Continental Furniture and Decorations, including Old Master Paintings and Drawings on October 24, 2012. The sale offered furniture and decorations from the 17th through early 19th centuries, as well as Continental, English and Chinese export porcelain, Georgian silver, sculpture, clocks, chandeliers, sconces, tapestries and rugs. The Old Master Paintings section of the sale showcased landscapes, still lifes, portraits and religious subjects by European artists from the Renaissance to the 19th century.
With competitive international bidding from the salesroom, the telephones and the Internet, the sale totaled $1,559,906 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,255,550-1,956,250, with a strong 79% sold by lot and 87% sold by value.
Old Master paintings featured a watercolor view of The Roman Pantheon and the Piazza della Rotonda. The work has been attributed to Louis Charles Clérisseau (1721-1820) or a member of his circle. Attracting a great deal of interest during the exhibition, the watercolor soared past its estimate of $3,000-5,000 and sold for $80,500, a world auction record for a single work by Clerisseau or a member of his circle. A French student of Pannini who lived and worked in Rome for much of his life, Clerisseau made his living painting views of Roman ruins in watercolor and gouache for gentlemen on the Grand Tour. This particular work is unusually large, measuring 29 1/4 x 40 5/8 inches, which makes it the largest known work attributed to the artist or his circle.
All prices include the buyer's premium.
