We Invite You to Contact Us for a Complimentary Auction Evaluation of Your Collection
On October 16, 2012, Doyle New York hosted the popular Doyle+Design auction showcasing Modern and Contemporary furniture, decorations and fine art by some of the most prominent designers, makers and artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. With competitive bidding from buyers in the salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet, the auction totaled $474,406, with a strong 70% sold by lot and 82% sold by value.
DESIGN
Highlighting the sale were two Art Deco enamel on metal vases by Camille Faure (French, 1874-1956). Decorated in colorful geometric patterns, the vases soared past their estimate of $3,000-4,000 to reach a staggering $33,750 from a bidder in Germany.
Also featured was a circa 1957 Surrealist flatware service designed by Salvador Dali (Spanish, 1904-1989) and marked by Pierre Hugo, Paris, that sold to a buyer in the United Kingdom for $21,250, surpassing its estimate of $10,000-15,000. This extraordinary service of silver gilt and sapphires comprised fish forks modeled as mythical beasts and fish knives modeled as leaves.
FURNITURE
The top lot among the furniture offerings was a handsome mahogany and brass bar cabinet with fitted interior designed in the 1950s by Tommi Parzinger (American, 1903-1981) that fetched $21,250 from a Connecticut buyer, more than doubling its estimate of $5,000-8,000.
JEWELRY
Jewelry in the sale featured a wood and gold necklace by Louise Nevelson (American, 1899-1988) that sold to a buyer in Texas for $12,500, many times its estimate of $3,000-5,000.
ART
The fine art section of the sale featured an untitled mixed metal sculpture by Hawaiian artist Satoru Abe (American, b. 1926) estimated at $800-1,200 that sold to a bidder in Hawaii for $12,500 – A World Auction Record for the Artist. A second work by Abe, a copper and bronze sculpture titled The Tree and also estimated at $800-1,200, achieved $8,125 from a bidder in New Jersey.
All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
