DOYLE NEW YORK'S IMPORTANT ESTATE JEWELRY SALE ON OCTOBER 17, 2012 TOTALS $5.6 MILLION
Fancy Yellow Diamond Ring Achieves $362,500
Belle Epoque Diamond and Natural Pearl Pendant Necklace Sells for $158,500
Consignments are currently being accepted for Doyle New York's next auction of Important Estate Jewelry scheduled for December 12, 2012.
Doyle New York's Important Estate Jewelry auction on October 17, 2012 saw international competition from hundreds of bidders in the salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet. The sale offered jewelry spanning the Antique, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern eras by some of the world's most prestigious makers, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Sterle, Chanel and David Webb. Also featured were fine watches and objets de vertu, including elegant compacts and cufflinks.
Strong international competition resulted in an exceptional auction total of $5,600,500, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $3,861,200-5,495,100, with a strong 82% sold by lot and 86% sold by value.
DIAMONDS
Highlighting the sale was a large selection of high-carat-weight diamond rings that sold exceptionally well. The top lot was a ring set with a Fancy Intense Yeloow diamond of 14.57 carats, VS1 clarity, that sold for 362,500, far surpassing its estimate of $175,000-275,000. A circa 1930 Art Deco diamond ring with an emerald-cut diamond of 4.67 carats, D color, VS1 clarity, achieved $218,500, well over its estimate of $100,000-150,000. A stunning diamond bracelet by David Webb with diamonds totalling 70.65 carats sold for $134,500 against an estimate of $100,000-150,000.
NATURAL PEARLS
Natural pearls perfomed strongly throughout the auction, highlighted by a Belle Epoque diamond and pearl pendant necklace. The circa 1905 necklace suspended a natural saltwater pearl measuring 14.12mm x 13.58mm and fetched $158,500 from a buyer in the United Kingdom, many times its estimate of $15,000-20,000.
COLORED STONES
Jewelry with colored stones featured a pair of antique earrings set with two cushion-shaped Kashmir sapphires weighing 4.37 carats that soared past their estimate of $10,000-15,000 to fetch $116,500 from an Asian buyer. A circa 1920 Art Deco ring by Dreicer & Co set with a Colombian emerald of 8.85 carats sold for $80,500, many times its estimate of $20,000-30,000.
WATCHES
The selection of watches offered in the sale was highlighted by an elegant circa 1925 Art Deco pearl and diamond wristwatch by Cartier, France, from the Estate of a Titled Lady. Estimated at $15,000-20,000, the watch sold for an impressive $53,125 to a buyer in Switzerland.
All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
