Doyle New York held a very successful auction of Old Master, Modern and Contemporary Prints on November 5, 2012. With competitive bidding from the salesroom, the telephones and the Internet, the sale totaled $560,469 against an estimate of $403,100-602,250 with a strong 81% sold by lot and 93% sold by value.
EUROPEAN PRINTS
Modern European prints featured several works by Pablo Picasso, including Jacqueline de Profil a Droite, lithograph, 1958, which sold for $43,750; color lithographs by Marc Chagall including In the Land of the Gods: Tomorrrow My Fair One shall Have a Dove, $13,750; prints by Joan Miro including Hai-Ku, complete set of seven color lithographs, 1967, $16,250; and Salvador Dali, The Divine Comedy, complete set of 100 color woodcuts, 1964, $5,625.
AMERICAN PRINTS
American prints included a rare signed drypoint by James Abbott McNeill Whistler, The Muff, 1874 which fetched a record $22,500; Joseph Pennell, Wren’s City, mezzotint, 1909, a record $4,375; several lithographs by George Bellows, including The White Hope, 1921, $12,500; and Gustave Baumann, Three Pines, color woodcut printed in 1956, a record $9,375.
CONTEMPORARY PRINTS
Contemporary prints were highlighted by Andy Warhol’s 25 Cats Named[d] Sam and One Blue Pussy, compete set of 18-hand-colored offset lithographs, circa 1954, $50,000 and Liz, color offset lithograph, 1964, $46,875; Roy Lichtenstein, Moonscape, color screenprint on blue Rowlux, 1965, $16,250; Keith Haring, Silence Equals Death, color screenprint, 1989, $12,500; Alex Katz, Black Brook, color aquatint, 1990, a record $3,438; and Victor Vasarely, Kedzi, color acrylic on wood multiple, 1990, $10,000.
All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
