Doyle New York’s November 5, 2012 sale of Photography offered an eclectic and interesting blend of images. With competitive bidding from the salesroom, the telephones and the Internet, the sale totaled $144,000 with 81% sold by lot and 80% sold by value.
A number of Berenice Adams photographs were sold, including her portrait of James Joyce, a late lifetime printing, which realized $2,000. Ruth Bernhard, Two Leaves, signed in green ink sold for $2,500. A good example of Margaret Bourke-White’s magnificent photograph of the airship Akron in its duralumin frame fetched $4,062.50. A small group of Manuel Alvarez Bravo’s photographs, later lifetime printings, included Retrato Postumo [Posthumous Portrait]; this dark memento mori sold for $3,437.50. Alvin Langdon Coburn’s magnificent gravure Canal in Rotterdam sold for $2,500. The classic Horst Mainbocher Corset realized $8,750, and a platinum-palladium print of Horst in Divers by his friend Hoyningen-Huene sold for $10,625.
A wonderful Winston Link photograph of Washing J Class 605, West Virginia made $6,250. A pair of unsigned (but rare) photographs by Herbert Matter of Mercedes Matter nude with driftwood made $2,812.50. Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison’s gravure The Guardian made $5,625, and his Cloud Cleaner, a large gelatin silver print with acrylic paints, gels and varnishes $10,625. A group of four George Platt Lynes photographs, including two superb images of Ruth Ford, hammered down at $2,500. A small Arthur Rothstein archive sold at $6.250, and George Tice’s hommage the Bechers, Petit’s Service Station, Cherry Hill, New Jersey realized $5.625. A Bruce Weber image of Hollywood Extras Zoetrope Studios sold for $2,812.50 and an Edward Weston (printed by his son Cole) of the Armco Steel works made $2,750. A beautiful Minor White of Ice in Light and Shadow concluded the sale at $5,937.50.
