Doyle New York’s auction of European Art on November 13, 2012 offered fine paintings, drawings and sculpture of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The works represented a range of artistic movements from Neoclassicism to Impressionism to Post-Impressionism to early Modernism.
Highlighting the sale was Giovanni Sottocornola’s (Italian, 1855-1917) bucolic depiction of a young shepherdess leading her flock, End of the Day (Pastorella con pecore), from the Spanierman Gallery, LLC Collection. Sottocornola is best known for his charming genre scenes set in Italy’s Lombardy region. Competitive bidding sent the painting soaring past its estimate of $10,000-15,000 to achieve a stunning $80,500.
By Pierre-Auguste Renoir (French, 1841-1919) was a diminutive 1890 study of roses, L’Etude de Cinq Roses, consigned by the Creekmore and Adele Fath Charitable Foundation Collection. Measuring a mere 6 inches x 5 1/4 inches, the work sold for $50,000, its high estimate.
A colorful work by the Vietnamese/French artist Le Pho (1907-2001) titled L’Heure du The depicted a classic elongated beauty enjoying her tea surrounded by lush tropical flowers and foliage. The painting sold for $37,500, surpassing its estimate of $15,000-35,000. Le Pho’s close friend Vu Cao Dam (Vietnamese/French, 1908-2000) was represented by a 1978 work, Le Deport, a view of a young woman bidding a dieu as her lover prepares to mount his horse. The work fetched $23,750, surpassing its estimate of $15,000-20,000.
Russian Easter by Sergei Kolesnikoff (Russian, 1889-1947) offered a view of the faithful gathered in front of a white-washed church on that solemn holy day. It sold for $25,000, within its estimate of $20,000-30,000.
The sale also offered works by Emile Bernard, Thomas Blinks, Fernand Le Quesne, Jean Jansem, Eugene Galien-Laloue, Gustav Klimt and Victor Gabriel Gilbert, among others.
All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
