Doyle New York's Important Estate Jewelry auction on April 16, 2012 saw international competition from hundreds of bidders in the salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet. The sale offered jewelry spanning the Antique, Victorian, Edwardian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco and Modern eras by some of the world's most prestigious makers, including Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Tiffany & Co., Sterle, Chanel and David Webb. Also featured were fine watches and objets de vertu, including elegant compacts and cufflinks.
Strong international competition resulted in an exceptional auction total of $7,223,250, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $4,775,200-6,825,900, with a strong 84% sold by lot and 88% sold by value.
DIAMOND RINGS
Highlighting the sale was a large selection of high-carat-weight diamond rings that sold exceptionally well. The top lot was a ring set with an old-mine heart-shaped diamond of 11.01 carats, F color, VS2. Consigned by a Florida estate and estimated at $200,000-300,000, the ring sold for a stunning $662,500. A diamond ring with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut diamond of 18.43 carats, J color, SI2 clarity, from a New York estate sold for $392,500, far surpassing its estimate of $175,000-275,000. Another ring set with a pear-shaped diamond of 4.21 carats, E color, VS1 clarity, achieved $146,500 against a pre-sale estimate of $70,000-90,000.
OTHER RINGS
Other rings in the sale included one set with an emerald-cut Colombian emerald of 17.35 carats, that sold for $338,500 against an estimate of $275,000-375,000. An Art Deco ruby and diamond ring set with a shield step-cut Burma ruby of 2.01 carats achieved $65,500, several times its estimate of $15,000-20,000.
An unusual circa 1950 diamond ‘fringe’ ring by Sterle estimated at a mere $2,500-3,500 sold for a staggering $53,125, a possible auction record for a fringe ring. From Chanel was a stylish emerald and multicolored sapphire ring that achieved $50,000, within its estimate of $40,000-60,000.
EARRINGS
The selection of earrings in the sale was topped by a pair of elegant emerald and diamond earclips by Van Cleef & Arpels set with two square-shaped Colombian emeralds totaling 7.80 carats that fetched $74,500 against an estimate of $60,000-80,000. A pair of circa 1920 emerald and diamond earrings centering two hexagonal-shaped Colombian emeralds totaling 7.20 carats sold for $43,750, near the top estimate of $35,000-45,000.
BRACELETS
Bracelets in the sale offered a Schlumberger, Tiffany & Co. bangle bracelet of lime green paillonne enamel set with sapphires that achieved $70,150, well over its estimate of 30,000-40,000.
