DOYLE NEW YORK'S FINE JEWELRY AUCTION ON FEBRUARY 21, 2012 TOPS $2.4 MILLION

Surpasses Pre-Sale Estimate of $1,449,975-2,072,090

Moderately Estimated Creations by Cartier, Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., Schlumberger and David Webb

We Invite You to Contact Us for a Complimentary Auction Evaluation of Your Jewelry

Doyle New York’s auction of Fine Jewelry on February 21, 2012 saw strong international competition from hundreds of bidders in the crowded salesroom, on the telephones, and on the Internet. The sale presented over 1,000 lots of jewelry with more moderate estimates than are offered in Doyle New York’s Important Estate Jewelry category of sales. Showcased were glittering creations – including many signed pieces – set with diamonds, colored stones and pearls, as well as gold jewelry, fine watches, and gentlemen's accessories. The auction also offered contents of abandoned safe deposit boxes by order of Bank of America and Banco Popular.

Competitive bidding resulted strong prices throughout the sale and a successful total of $2,433,518, surpassing the pre-sale estimate of $1,449,975-2,072,090, with an exceptional 93% sold by lot and 92% sold by value.

Highlighting the sale was an exquisite Art Deco Japanesque desk clock by Cartier, circa 1920. Fashioned from rock crystal, mother-of-pearl, abalone pearl, enamel and diamonds, the clock, despite some condition issues with the rock crystal, soared past its estimate of $6,000-8,000 to achieve a stunning $46,875. Also featured among the objets de vertu was a lot of four 18 karat gold statues from the Treasures of Tutankhamen series that fetched $20,000, surpassing their estimate of $8,000-12,000.

Bracelets in the sale offered a classic Schlumberger bangle bracelet of gold, red paillonne enamel, and diamonds by Tiffany & Co. that achieved $40,625 against an estimate of $25,000-35,000. An invisibly-set sapphire and diamond bracelet set with 40.00 carats of sapphires sold for $11,250, well over its estimate of $5,000-7,000.

The selection of necklaces in the auction included an amethyst, diamond and opal pendant-necklace, the opal weighing approx. 43.50 carats, that sold for $17,500, at the high end of its $12,000-18,000 estimate. Brooches featured an unusual Archeological Revival gold and carnelian scarab brooch, circa 1870, consigned by the Museum of The City of New York and sold to benefit its Textile and Costume Collection. Estimated at $2,000-3,000, it sold for a surprising $10,000.

The sale offered a large selection of diamond rings, including an example set with a round diamond weighing 3.16 carats that fetched $17,500, surpassing its estimate of $10,000-15,000.  Also selling for $17,500 was a platinum and diamond band ring set with sixteen asscher-cut diamonds totaling approx. 8.00 carats and estimated at $12,000-18,000. A platinum and diamond crossover ring set with two old European-cut diamonds totaling approx. 4.53 carats achieved $16,250, more than doubling its estimate of $6,000-8,000. A white gold and diamond ring set with a round diamond approx. 2.00 carats, I color, VS1 clarity, also fetched $16,250.

Earrings in the sale offered a pair of platinum and diamond pendant-earclips totaling approx. 12.85 carats that fetched $11,875, and a pair of white gold, sapphire and diamond pendant-earrings, sapphires totaling approx. 7.90 carats, that sold for $9,600, surpassing their estimate of $4,000-6,000.

All prices include the Buyer's Premium.
