TALL CASE CLOCK ATTRIBUTED TO R. J. HORNER WILL HIGHLIGHT DOYLE NEW YORK'S SEPTEMBER 15, 2010 BELLE EPOQUE AUCTION

Showcasing the Fine and Decorative Arts of the Fin de Siecle

Featuring an Italian Renaissance Revival Bed by Luigi Frullini and a Selection of Objects by Tiffany Studios

Doyle New York’s auction on Wednesday, September 15 at 10am will showcase fine and decorative arts reflecting the opulence of the Belle Epoque. Extravagant furniture and decorations of the Louis XV and XVI revivals, Victorian, Art Nouveau and Art Deco eras will be offered, as well as art glass, Majolica, porcelain, silver, marble statues, bronzes, ivories, clocks, sconces, chandeliers, rugs, and a selection of Tiffany Studios articles. Complementing the furniture and decorations will be an assortment of fin de siecle paintings.

Highlighting the furniture in the sale is a massive late 19th century American Renaissance Revival mahogany figural tall case clock attributed to R.J. Horner, the dial signed by J.C. Jennens & Son, London (est. $50,000-70,000). Also of note is an elaborate Italian Renaissance Revival carved walnut half tester bed by Luigi Frullini, Florence circa 1870-75 from the John Carl Warnecke Trust (est. $15,000-20,000). John Carl Warnecke (1919-2010) was one of the most prominent American architects of the 20th century, having designed the Hawaii State Capitol building, the John F. Kennedy Eternal Flame memorial gravesite at Arlington National Cemetery, and the South Terminal (now Terminal B) at Logan International Airport in Boston.

Bronzes feature an Art Deco bronze and ivory figural group of a couple dressed in 18th century attire after a model by A. Gilbert, circa 1925, height 25 inches (est. $25,000-30,000); a pair of Auguste Nicholas Cain bronze candelabra in the Aesthetic Movement style, height 32 1/4 inches (est. $2,000-3,000); a gilt-bronze figure of Icarus after a model by B. Clemente, circa 1900, height 31 1/4 inches (est. $2,000-4,000); and a bronze figure of a woman entitled The Spring after a model by Mathurin Moreau, cast by E. Colin & Cie., Paris, height 19 3/4 inches (est. $2,000-3,000).

From Tiffany Studios are a bronze and leaded favrile glass harp floor lamp (est. $10,000-15,000); a wheel carved favrile glass vase, circa 1907, decorated with red nasturtiums (est. $5,000-7,000); two favrile glass vases of floriform with elongated stems (est. each $5,000-7,000 and $4,000-6,000); as well as other lamps, vases and desk accessories.

Certain to attract attention is a J. & R. Lamb Studios leaded and painted glass window designed by Frederick Stymetz Lamb, late 19th/early 20th century, depicting an angel (est. $10,000-15,000). Art glass offers creations by Galle, Daum, Loetz and Lalique.

Porcelain is highlighted by a Sevres gilt decorated partial dinner service, Chateau de Fontainebleau, late 19th/early 20th century, in the Royal Hunting pattern (est. $4,000-6,000); a pair of Minton pate-sur-pate urns by Louis Salon (est. $3,000-5,000); and a pair of Sevres style gilt-bronze mounted gilt and polychrome decorated urns, late 19th century (est. $3,000-5,000). Pottery features a Moorcroft Hazeldene vase made for Liberty & Co., early 20th century (est. $2,500-3,500).

Silver offers a Russian cloisonne enameled silver footed bowl made for Tiffany & Co., late 19th century (est. $1,500-2,500) and examples by such prestigious makers as Gorham, Tiffany & Co., Reed & Barton, Georg Jensen and Buccellati, including a flatware service in the French Empire pattern.

Highlighting the selection of fin de siecle paintings is Adolf Schreyer’s (German, 1828-1899) The Halt for Shelter from the Collection of Hugh J. Grant and Lucie Mackey Grant (est. $8,000-12,000). Also noteworthy are Ernst Klemm’s (Austrian, 19th Century) A Good Read (est. $4,000-6,000); George Edwards Hering’s (British, 1805-1879) Afternoon in the Garden (est. $3,000-5,000); Lucien Whiting Powell’s (American, 1846-1930) Venetian Canal, 1901 (est. $3,000-5,000); William Lee Hankey’s (British, 1869-1952) St. Pol du Var (est. $3,000-5,000); and Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac's (French, 1884-1974), Verger, le Printemps (est. $3,000-5,000).
