Original Artwork for the 2009 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Fetches $2,275

Doyle New York’s 11th Annual Dogs in Art Auction on March 24, 2009 showcased canine paintings and sculpture and sporting art by some of the genre's most important artists. Art collectors and dog fanciers from across the nation and around the world vied for breed portraits that highlight a breed’s characteristics, sporting paintings that illustrate a dog’s working abilities, and charming pet portraits, as well as fine sporting paintings. With bidders in the salesroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the sale totaled $168,056 with 61% sold by lot and 68% sold by value.


BENEFIT BRUNCH CO-HOSTED WITH THE WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB
During the exhibition of the Dogs in Art Auction, Doyle New York and the Westminster Kennel Club co-hosted a champagne brunch to benefit Angel On A Leash therapy dog program at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. The brunch featured a private viewing of the Dogs in Art sale, a complimentary auction catalogue, and take-home "doggie bags" courtesy of Pedigree® Food for Dogs.

William D. Pawley was the former U.S. Ambassador to Peru, Brazil and was also based in Panama, Guatemala, Cuba and Nicaragua. Besides his diplomatic duties, Pawley was also an avid hunter.
 
William Harnden Foster was an avid sportsman and a great admirer of the pointer.  At a time when setters were championed as the dog for grouse hunting, Foster preferred the pointer for his grouse trialing and shooting wants.  Through his association with the National Sportsman Magazine he was acquainted with many noted sportsmen and conservationists.  Ever interested in preserving the integrity of the sport of grouse trialing and shooting and in sharpening the skills of the shooter and the dogs, Foster, along with several associates, developed "skeet", which was a method for practicing the shooting of a moving object.  He compiled all his love and knowledge of the sport and in 1942 published the book New England Grouse Shooting, which has remained one of the great classics of the sport.

Doyle New York was honored to offer the original artwork for the 2009 poster of the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show. Westminster. There’s only one. by acclaimed artist Trish Biddle depicts representative breeds from all seven competitive groups in the dog show, plus the 2008 Best in Show winner, Uno. In the background is New York’s iconic Empire State Building lit in the Westminster club colors of blue and gold.
