Including a Selection of Fine Sporting Paintings and the Original Artwork for the 2008 Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show

Dog Brunch Hosted with The Westminster Kennel Club Benefited Angel On A Leash Therapy Dog Program

Coinciding each year with the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, Doyle New York’s 10th Annual Dogs in Art auction on February 12, 2008 showcased canine paintings and sculpture and sporting art by some of the genre's most important artists. Hundreds of art collectors and dog fanciers from across the nation and around the world vied for breed portraits that highlight a breed’s characteristics, sporting paintings that illustrate a dog’s working abilities, and charming pet portraits, as well as fine sporting paintings.

With spirited bidding in the salesroom, on the telephones and via the Internet, the sale totaled a strong $676,350, well over the pre-sale estimate of $427,180-610,345 with 84% sold by lot and 93% sold by value.

CASSIUS MARCELLUS COOLIDGE
Highlighting the sale was Only a Pair of Deuces by Cassius Marcellus Coolidge, depicting a group of dogs around a poker table. After strong competition in the salesroom and on the telephones, it sold to a phone bidder for staggering $193,000. The work was one of two paintings in the auction by Coolidge, both from the estate of the artist’s daughter, Marcella B. Coolidge. The other painting, entitled A Breach of Promise Suit, illustrated a canine court proceeding set barn and sold to a phone bidder for $32,200. On February 15, 2005, Doyle New York auctioned a pair of paintings depicting dogs playing poker by Coolidge, A Bold Bluff and Waterloo, which achieved a record $590,400 for the pair. A SELECTION OF AUCTION HIGHLIGHTS

CASSIUS MARCELLUS COOLIDGE (1844-1934) was born near the town of Antwerp in upstate New York to abolitionist Quaker farmers, Nathan and Martha Coolidge, who named him after Cassius Marcellus Clay, the famed Kentucky anti-slavery crusader. Cassius Coolidge, or “Cash” as many called him, engaged in a remarkably diverse series of professions early in his life. He established Antwerp’s first bank and newspaper, was co-owner of two drugstores, patented a fare-collecting device for streetcars, and even wrote an opera. An accomplished cartoonist, he is also credited with creating the familiar life-size Boardwalk cutouts, which he called Comic Foregrounds, into which one's head was placed so as to be photographed as an amusing character.

In 1903, Coolidge contracted with the advertising firm of Brown & Bigelow of St. Paul, Minnesota to create sixteen paintings of dogs in various human-like situations. Nine of these paintings depicted dogs around a card table. On February 15, 2005, Doyle New York auctioned two works from the series, A Bold Bluff and Waterloo, which sold for a record $590,400.

In 1909, Coolidge married Gertrude Kimmel (1880?-1977), who was employed as a letter painter in his Comic Foreground business. A year later, she gave birth to the couple’s only child, Marcella B. Coolidge (1910-2007).
