POINTER
WINS "BEST IN SHOW" AT DOYLE NEW YORK'S SIXTH ANNUAL
DOGS IN ART AUCTION
FEBRUARY
10, 2004 AUCTION COINCIDED WITH WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB DOG SHOW
DOGS
IN ART BRUNCH HOSTED WITH A.K.C. RAISED $10,000 FOR DOGNY
On
Tuesday, February 10, 2004, Doyle New York hosted the sixth annual
Dogs in Art auction. Coinciding each year with the Westminster
Kennel Club Dog Show in New York, the auction offered over 275
lots of paintings, sculpture and ephemera celebrating our canine
companions. Hundreds of art collectors and dog fanciers from across
the nation and around the world vied for breed portraits that highlight
a breed's characteristics, sporting paintings that illustrate a
dog's working abilities, and charming pet portraits.
"Top
dog" at this year's auction was American artist Arthur Fitzwilliam
Tait's (1819-1905) Pointer Retrieving a Woodcock, which sold
for $23,900 to a collector in the southern states via the Internet.
Other highlighted lots included works by Arthur Wardle, Philip Eustace
Stretton, Franklin Whiting Rogers, John Emms and John Henry Dolph,
among others. In all, 75% of the sale sold by lot, 80% by value.
In
conjunction with the pre-sale exhibition of the Dogs in Art auction,
Doyle New York hosted three special events a Weekend Walkabout
gallery tour with Specialist Alan Fausel on Saturday, February 7;
a Dogs in Art Brunch co-hosted with the A.K.C. which raised $10,000
for DOGNY on Sunday, February 8; and a slide lecture profiling
the AKC Museum of the Dog on Monday, February 9.

Sunday, February 8, over 200 dog fanciers and their well-behaved
canine companions attended a special brunch benefiting the
DOGNY, the American Kennel Club's charitable
fund which supports canine search and rescue organizations
across the nation through AKC CAR Canine Support and Relief
Fund. With strong coverage by both the television and
print media, the event featured a private viewing of the Dogs
in Art sale, a champagne brunch for the humans in attendance,
and take-home "doggie bags" courtesy of Pedigree
Food for Dogs for the art-loving canines. Celebrity gossip
columnist Cindy Adams, accompanied by her two Yorkies,
Juicy and Jazzy Jr., signed copies of her acclaimed book,
The Gift of Jazzy. A "howling" success, the
